Description of the Host Organisation:
Established in 2003, HIAM-Health is a local NGO that focuses on reducing malnutrition and improving nutrition through education and agriculture in Timor-Leste. HIAM’s two key activities are: 1) nutrition education and rehabilitation; 2) Home Kitchen Gardens Program: teaching families/communities on how to grow a variety of nutritious vegetables home using organic/permaculture techniques.
HIAM provides residential rehabilitation and care for malnourished children and nutrition, health, agriculture education/training for parents during their stay as a preventative strategy to combat malnutrition. As a secondary health service provider, HIAM’s Malnutrition and Rehabilitation Centre is unique to Timor and is the only one of its kind. Patients are referred to HIAM from the Dili National Hospital and district health clinics. The Centre also has a unique 800mtsq organic vegetable garden, which feeds patients and families, and a training centre for family and community groups to learn how to grow a variety of nutritious vegetables.
The vision of HIAM-Health is to empower Timorese people to reduce high infant and maternal mortality rates and to assist in the reduction of poverty and hunger through education and support.
